Here's How Much Space You Need for iOS 8

Apple's iOS 8 is available now, but you might need to clear some space before you install it.

Users have been surprised to find that the update requires 4.6 GB of space, a significant chunk of memory for many iPads and iPhones. Business Insider broke down the large file size, which is due to the need to store the compressed file, the uncompressed update, and the previous system version of iOS 7. Once the update has taken effect, the old system version and the compressed file will be deleted.

If you can't fit such a large update on your iDevice, you can back up its contents and delete large files, then put them back in place after the update has finished. Alternately, you can sync it with iTunes on your computer, which will install the update without needing so much extra space.

iOS 8 includes a new HealthKit software suite, Continuity features for syncing with a MacBook, QuickType prediction, and improvements to widgets and Siri.
