An all-new Oculus Rift prototype has been announced.
Called the Crescent Bay, the prototype features 360 degree tracking, higher resolution, integrated audio, a more comfortable fit, and a better frame rate.
The prototype was revealed during CEO Bredan Iribe's keynote speech on Oculus' Connect livestream. Iribe claims the prototype makes significant changes to the hardware and is another step toward the release of a consumer version of the VR headset.
"We're sprinting toward the consumer version," Iribe said of the company's progress to release the Oculus Rift for public use.
According to Iribe, over 100,000 units of the development kit have been shipped to over 130 countries, and pre-orders for the most recent version DK2 are still being filled.
Iribe also spoke of the future of both desktop and mobile VR, citing the Gear VR mobile headset revealed by Samsung earlier this month. The Oculus CEO explained that, while it might appear that both versions could be competitors, he believes them to complement one another, much like smartphones complement laptops.
