NYCC: Production Begins on Guardians of the Galaxy Animated Series

The Marvel television panel went down at New York Comic-Con today, with Jeph Loeb -- master of all things TV related at the House of Ideas -- doing his usual bid to get fans frothing at the mouth over the company’s Disney XD series. Glimpses of upcoming Ultimate Spider-Man ("The Spider-Verse"!) and Avengers Assemble (Winter Soldier!) episodes were shown, as was a full episode of Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H. that features a guest spot by the Guardians of the Galaxy.

But the big news out of the panel was the reveal that the Guardians animated series, which was first announced at San Diego Comic-Con last July, is now in production and slated for a 2015 debut. And not just that, but a brief “test animation” was shown to the crowd to provide a sense of the look of the show.

The clip was perhaps less than a minute long, and featured Rocket Raccoon falling and tumbling in silhouette through the towering, alien cityscape of some futuristic world. It’s raining and colorful and neon in a Blade Runner kind of way, and when Rocket finally lands, we see Star-Lord standing there. This is very much the Chris Pratt version of the character, with the same helmet (which “disappears” on command) and jacket. Rocket fires his laser guns, and Star-Lord says something like “If you’re gonna hang with me, you’ll need bigger blasters” -- typical Peter Quill ‘tude. The art of the characters had an interesting, somewhat different look to them compared to the other Marvel animated series going right now. Nothing too drastic, but def. a slightly different feel.

This poster, revealed at EW, gives a sense of that look:

Of course, this was billed as in-progress artwork, so time will tell how the show will shape up. Stay tuned to IGN for more on this series as we hear it!
