To mark the Trine series surpassing more than 7 million copies sold worldwide, independent developer Frozenbyte released the editor tools for Trine Enchanted Edition and Trine 2: Complete Story on Steam today.
"We've reached a higher userbase than we ever thought possible, but now we hope that people who've yet to play the Trine games will give them a shot during the Free Weekend on Steam,” Frozenbyte CEO Lauri Hyvärinen said in a statement. “Opening up the games to user generated content is something we've wanted to do for a long time, and we're thrilled to see what people can come up with using the Editors."
The editor allows players to edit existing maps, create new ones or build new games. Mods created with the editor can be published Steam Workshop for Trine and Trine 2. Users can learn more on Frozenbyte's official wiki guide. The developer also revealed that its new iOS platformer Splot is slated to launch on the App Store on October 23.
Since the original Trine launched in 2009, the fantasy action platformer has been released across eight platforms including PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Wii U, Windows PC, Mac, Linux and Android. We thought the first release was "a highly recommended puzzle platformer" and its sequel "throws players into a dazzling fantasy world."
Trine 2 is one of 10 titles in Steam’s Free Weekend promotion and is available to purchase at an 80 percent discount until Sunday, October 19 at 1:00 p.m. PT. Trine is also available to play for free over the weekend.kotaku.com
