Sanae Furukawa

Series/Film: Clannad, Clannad: After Story

Sanae Furukawa is the beloved mother of the kind and innocent Nagisa, as well as wife of the rather brusque Akio, who helps her run the Furukawa Bread store. At first glance, Sanae appears to be a childish woman who easily cries whenever she is told that her baked goods are a failure. Her youthful appearance often causes people to mistake her for Nagisa's older sister.

In reality, Sanae is a strong-willed and dependable person who gave up her dream to be a teacher in order to raise and take care of Nagisa when she was sickly in her younger years. In Clannad: After Story, Sanae is the primary caretaker of her granddaughter Ushio. Sanae also masterminded the reconciliation between Ushio and her father Tomoya after years of neglect. Supportive, kind, and motherly, Sanae is the personification of the ideal anime mother.

Just don't talk bad about her baking.

Kyoko Honda

Series/Film: Fruits Basket

She may not be alive at the start of the series, but Kyoko Honda plays a major role in the story of Fruits Basket. Kyoko used to be a former gang leader who constantly got into trouble, until she fell in love and married her teacher, Katsuya Honda. A few years after Tohru was born, Katsuya passes away due to illness. From then on, she constantly strives to always smile and be the best parent that she could to her daughter.

Besides being responsible for raising Tohru to be a loving, kind, and optimistic girl, it is shown in flashbacks that Kyoko served as a role model to Tohru's friend, Arisa, who also used to be a gang member. Kyoko also befriended Kyo Sohma when he was a young boy, sensing his loneliness from being ostracized from the rest of his family.

Yasuko Takasu

Series/Film: Toradora!

Yasuko is the youthful but klutzy mother of Ryuuji Takasu, working as a club hostess to support her family. She raised Ryuuji by herself after his father left her while she was pregnant. The absence of a father figure results in Ryuuji learning to be self-sufficient, so he takes care of the cooking and household chores.

Despite having a childish, immature side, Yasuko cares deeply for her son Ryuuji, and she was willing to even take on two jobs to support him so that he could concentrate on his studies. She also becomes a surrogate mother figure to Taiga Aisaka when she enters their lives, giving advice and welcoming her to the family. Yasuko isn't the perfect mother, but she truly loves her son and wants the best for him.

Sakae Jinnouchi

Series/Film: Summer Wars

Although she may be a 90-years-old great-grandmother, Sakae Jinnouchi is the unshakeable matriarch and badass of the Jinnouchi family. When the virtual world of OZ gets hacked by a malevolent AI called Love Machine, the country's infrastructure becomes paralyzed, causing massive delays and confusion among emergency services. Sanae shows off her powerful political connections by calling up high ranking officials to bring order to chaos.

But Sakae also shows her loving side by adopting and raising her husband's illegitimate son, Wabisuke. After her untimely death in the movie, her will is discovered. In it, she implores her relatives to forgive Wabisuke misgivings and accept him into the family. Her death unites the family in grief, and together they put a stop to Love Machine. As the driving force of the Jinnouchi family, Sanae represents steely resolve as well as unconditional love.

Hana

Series/Film: Wolf Children

Being a single mother of two young children is no easy task, especially if they are half-werewolf. Hana is just an ordinary college girl when she falls in love with a werewolf. They have two children soon after but her husband dies before he is able to teach her how to overcome the difficulties of raising half-werewolf children. But instead of blaming her children for her hardships, she moves to the countryside to raise them from prying eyes.

Hana embodies a mother's steadfastness, strength, and dedication to her children, always supporting them in their endeavors. The biggest sign of Hana's love for her children is her willingness to let them follow their dreams – especially her son Ame. At the end of the film, Ame chooses to live in the forest as a wolf despite Hana's fears and concerns that his fate may mirror his father's. But she accepts that her son has chosen his path, and wishes him well.
