Might Christoph Waltz be toying with us? Like a super-villain’s cat, toying with a mouse? When the cast for new Bond film SPECTRE was announced, he was listed as playing Franz Oberhauser, but there's a school of thought that the character is really Bond’s arch-nemesis, Ernst Stavro Blofeld.
That belief now seems to be considered fact, but in an interview with GQ magazine, the two-time Oscar-winner stated that it very much isn't the case.
“That is absolutely untrue” he told the magazine. “That rumour started on the Internet, and the Internet is a pest. The name of my character is Franz Oberhauser.”
Waltz has made his name playing villains, so perhaps this is part of his master plan to dupe the public. And Hollywood has recent form on this front, with everyone involved with Star Trek Into Darkness denying Benedict Cumberbatch was playing Khan, when really he was.
Or maybe he’s playing with semantics. There’s little doubt his character is actually called Oberhauser, so maybe Blofeld is a code-name, or a name that isn’t uttered during the film, and Waltz is being economical with the truth.
Whatever the case, the mystery is certainly deepening, so let us know whether you think he’s playing Blofeld in the comments, and check out our speculation in the below teaser commentary...
