Double Fine Opens Prototyping Process to the Public

Today, the folks at Double Fine Productions (Psychonauts, Brutal Legend) announced that their annual Amnesia Fortnight Project would be open to the public this year. This prototyping process has given rise to complete consumer games like Costume Quest and Once Upon a Monster.

In the past, Amnesia Fortnight was held in private at Double Fine's San Francisco headquarters. During a two week period, the developers would split into smaller teams and each make a game during that time. "I wanted to have the company have other voices besides mine, making games," notes Double Fine President and CEO Tim Schafer in an interview with IGN.

Previously, the team leaders of these prototypes were selected by Schafer himself. This year, however, you can vote on your favorite pitch from the various teams and contribute to the project on the Humble Bundle website. You can pay whatever you want, and you can even divert some of your payment to charity.

If you're interested in time traveling bro brawlers, space station simulators, or physics-based blob puzzlers, this is a project you may want to look into.

Once the winning projects are selected, 2 Player Productions will document the development process for two weeks. Once Amnesia Fortnight ends, contributors (That's You!) will receive all the prototypes, as well as two historical prototypes for Costume Quest and Happy Song (which inspired Once Upon a Monster). And perhaps one of the prototypes will even evolve into a complete consumer product! But Double Fine can make no promises of that. "It could all crash and burn," Schafer warned us with a laugh.

When asked if the team would be interested in keeping this process open to the public in future years, Schafer simply mused "once we open the doors to the chocolate factory, it's really hard to close them again."

To contribute and vote on your favorite pitch, head over to the Humble Bundle website now.

T-Shirt of the Day - Duck Hunt

What happens when birds fight back? Nothing good, if "Birds" was any indication.

But today's shirt of the day brings good news - the ducks might not be after us when they eventually rise to power. In fact, we may share a common enemy - the world's most annoying dog.

You know, on second thought let's wait and see how this plays out.

Toy Story 3 Screenwriter May Write Star Wars: Episiode VII

Today brings word that Star Wars: Episode VII may have found its screenwriter.

Vulture claims that Oscar winner Michael Arndt (Toy Story 3, Little Miss Sunshine) "has written a 40- to 50-page treatment for the film and is likely to be at least one of the writers when the Disney/Lucasfilm project begins shooting in 2014." They say Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia and Han Solo are indeed in it.

Furthermore, Vulture hears "Arndt's 40-something page treatment will soon be crossing the desks of top directors, including Brad Bird, Steven Spielberg (Lucasfilm’s co-chair, Kathleen Kennedy's former producing partner), and J.J. Abrams. Whether they’d be interested is unknown (Star Wars is a lot of baggage for an established director), but Disney wants to make sure they’ve at least tried the biggest names."

Arndt also co-wrote the screenplay adaptation of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, which is currently in production.

Polygon Man: PlayStation All-Stars’ Final Boss

It’s been long rumored that Polygon Man is the final boss in PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale. Today, we can confirm that this is, indeed, the case. In PlayStation All-Stars’ introduction video, seen below (and viewable whenever you turn on the game), you’ll see each of the game’s 10 rivalries culminate with a quick glimpse of Polygon Man himself.

Who is Polygon Man, you ask? In short, he’s the original PlayStation mascot, designed to tease the power of the PlayStation before it launched in the west in 1995. Interestingly, the ad campaign was pulled before the console launched in North America. According to Edge, this reportedly occurred when Sony Computer Entertainment founder and former CEO Ken Kutaragi “went absolutely insane” upon seeing it on Sony’s E3 booth in 1995. In other words, he wasn’t pleased.

But that hasn’t stopped Polygon Man from persisting in the minds of the most hardcore PlayStation faithful, and his inclusion in PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale indicates that the team at SuperBot Entertainment has its roots firmly planted in the same soil PlayStation sprouted from nearly two decades ago. But the intro video itself also serves a purpose apart from simply showing off Polygon Man, as SuperBot Entertainment’s Omar Kendall explains.

“We really wanted to play up the concept of rivalries” in All-Stars, Kendall said, the hypothetical “what ifs” of the universe they’ve created where the unlikeliest of characters can face-off against one another. The intro video allows SuperBot Entertainment to do that. With the video’s script and design concocted in-house, SuperBot utilized the skills of Zoic Studios to render and create the intro itself.

But for Kendall, a veteran of the fighting development scene, an intro such as this serves another purpose. “This was another note that we could hit that was very much in line with the overall message that PlayStation All-Stars really is, or at least has roots in traditional fighting games.” He mentions games like Soul Calibur and Marvel vs. Capcom 3 as examples of great fighting games with epic intros like the one they’ve attempted to put in their game.

With all 10 of the rivalries shown-off in full, Kendall noted that there were some “fantasy matchups” in there, like Ratchet & Clank versus Jak & Daxter, as well as some “in your face” rivalries, and some more subtle “easter egg” rivalries, like the one between Nathan Drake and Sly Cooper that play off of the fact that both are treasure hunters… or perhaps thieves. He describes the entire scenario as being “big notes” complemented by “subtle cues.”

The rivalries are as follows:

  • Ratchet & Clank versus Jak & Daxter
  • Sly Cooper versus Nathan Drake
  • Fat Princess versus Evil Cole MacGrath
  • Sir Daniel Fortesque versus Colonel Radec
  • Sackboy versus Big Daddy
  • Nariko versus Dante
  • Heihachi versus Toro
  • Spike versus Parappa the Rapper
  • Good Cole MacGrath versus Raiden
  • Sweet Tooth versus Kratos

Kendall stressed that the story in All-Stars should be loose and act as an excuse for these characters to come together. But it shouldn’t be construed as canon. He “didn’t want a big, sort of heavy story that was going to feel really arbitrary and cheesy and kind of pull the players out. Because these characters… come from these really rich worlds already, and I knew that this game wasn’t going to serve to paint the sort of official storylines of these individual characters. I knew it was going to be something that they experience together mutually, in some ways exclusively, and then go back to their worlds. You’re really not going to see their experiences in PlayStation All-Stars reflected in God of War IV or God of War V.”

Yet, citing the famous Michael ad (seen below), Kendall admits that “all of these characters live inside this shared space,” later noting that “we thought it would be really cool if we, as opposed to trying really hard to create this fiction and explain why Kratos and Sackboy are in the same world together, just sort of casually acknowledge the fact that this world is living inside of your PlayStation.”

It’s that very notion – the world living inside of your PlayStation – that influenced the team to put Polygon Man in PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale as the final boss.

“When we were thinking about a boss for PlayStation All-Stars, we asked ourselves ‘what was the ultimate manifestation of PlayStation?’ And for us, it was Polygon Man. If you could look at some of the original material that Polygon Man appeared in, he makes these crazy statements, these sort of almost nonsensical statements, like ‘power is an illusion’, ‘absolute power is a seamless illusion’. These really weird, grandiose statements. He doesn’t really come off as a bad guy, but he comes off as kind of this representative of power, the power and potential and what PlayStation represents. So we thought it would be really cool if at the center of this shared universe all of these PlayStation characters inhabit was Polygon Man, waiting as the ultimate challenge for this world.”

Kendall went on. “If you look at the rivalry cutscene, it takes place in this kind of blue polygonal space. That, for us, is kind of the PlayStation universe at its base. You’ll see the XMB power waves flying in the background, you’ll see the PlayStation shapes flying around in the background. That’s kind of like the PlayStation landscape stripped bare to its essence… You see that space transition into the purple Polygon Man colors, and for us, Polygon Man is made of the same stuff, I guess, as the essence of the PlayStation universe.”

Believe it or not, however, Polygon Man wasn’t the original idea for the final boss in PlayStation All-Stars. The team at SuperBot came up with many ideas, including ones that took from certain games. An idea floated early on was the Helghan Army from Killzone being the game’s villain. But those sorts of ideas didn’t jive with the idea of what PlayStation All-Stars was all about.

“I think what we realized when we were going through our exploration was that yeah, certainly we could identify a single evil entity from one of our characters’ universes,” Kendall explained. “It could be Zeus (from God of War), it could be Dr. Nefarious (from Ratchet & Clank), it could be any of our sort of standard villains. But we felt that as a game called PlayStation All-Stars, we really wanted the final challenge to not draw from a single, particular IP, but really, we wanted the final challenge to be against the entire PlayStation brand itself. And when we began to think about it that way, Polygon Man really became the obvious choice.”

Activision Beats Earnings Estimates, Continues Record-Breaking Year

Activision reported earnings for the third quarter of its current fiscal year today, bringing in $841 million in net revenue, including digital revenue of $427 million. The quarter beat estimates, rising 20% compared to last year, and Activision said it’s broken records for the first nine months of the calendar year. Activision CFO Dennis Durkin noted that as of September 30th (when the quarter ended), Activision “had no debt and $3.4 billion in cash and investments."

Particular highlights were the Skylanders franchise -- which has brought in more than $500 million in sales to date -- and Diablo III, which has been sold more than 10 million times. Activision also reiterated that World of Warcraft has more than 10 million subscribers and remains the world’s biggest MMO thanks to 2.7 million copies of Mists of Pandaria sold in its first week. Activision did note that it expects a decline next year, with CEO Bobby Kotick commenting “as we look to calendar 2013, we remain cautious in light of a challenging worldwide macroeconomic environment, the ongoing console transition and difficult year-over-year comparables as a result of Blizzard's record-shattering success with Diablo III in 2012.”

Looking ahead, Activision revised its expected earnings for the full 2012 calendar year from $4.3 billion to $4.57 billion, pointing to the potentially record-breaking launch of Call of Duty: Black Ops II and the continued success of both Skylanders and Diablo. Activision also hinted at content set to come next year and beyond, with Starcraft II: Heart of the Swarm scheduled for the first half of 2013 and the news that Diablo III will receive an expansion.

Next-gen consoles were also brought up many times by investors, and Kotick noted “we can't really talk too much about next generation console plans, but I think it's safe to say you have a Wii U coming out and there will be another new console coming and we expect that they'll be very successful.” He added that “we always evaluate all platforms with an eye towards being able to create the most compelling differentiated content. And whether it's Facebook as a platform or tablets or mobile devices platforms, once we think that we can put our best creative foot forward and we can deliver something that's compelling and engaging and meaningfully different and really capitalize on the capabilities of a new platform, we'll support it.”

In addition to Black Ops II, Activision’s upcoming release slate includes Transformers Prime for Wii U in November as well as The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct and Deadpool in 2013.

Man of Steel Will Be Released in 3D

Superman's going to do something Batman's never done before on the big screen: 3D.

Warner Bros. announced today that Man of Steel will be available in 3D in select theaters, as well as in 2D and IMAX, when it opens June 14, 2013.

"The film is going to be a visually exciting experience in all formats: 2D, 3D and IMAX. Anticipating how audiences today embrace 3D, we designed and photographed the movie in a way that would allow ‘Man of Steel’ to captivate those movie goers, while respecting fans who prefer a more traditional cinematic experience. We’ve taken great measures to ensure the film and the story come first, and 3D is meant as an enhancement," said Man of Steel director Zack Snyder in a statement.

Nintendo Announces Wii U Karaoke

Arguably the biggest news coming out of today's Nintendo Direct livestream was that Nintendo is developing its own karaoke software, snappily titled: Nintendo-JoySound Wii Karaoke U. You'll apparently be able to use the in-built mic or purchase a special Wii U karaoke microphone, which will come with a trial disc.

Over 90,000 songs will be available. But don't get too excited, it's unlikely the service will be made available outside of Japan.

Would you like to see Wii U Karaoke come to the West? Let us know in the comments below.

Nintendo Details Miiverse

Today Nintendo President Satoru Iwata delivered another Nintendo Direct livestream, in which he detailed some of the Wii U’s functionality with a focus on Nitendo’s new online service, Miiverse.

When you first power-up the Wii U, you'll be taken to Warawara plaza where you'll make a Miiverse account. Each Wii U will be able to support up to ten different account, with each one containing unique save game data, browser bookmarks and other user-specific information.

Iwata also demonstrated how Miiverse will provide a helpful, informative community while playing specific games. Say you only get a silver medal on a level in New Super Mario Bros. Wii U. You can now turn to the Miiverse community for advice on how to claim gold next time. If you die several times, you'll be asked to talk about your frustration on Miiverse. You can choose to follow reliable or particularly help contributors, and there's even a function to hide spoilerific contributions. Iwata also said that Miiverse functionality can be integrated without additional work for developers.

Incidentally, Iwata also used the opportunity to don a pair of immaculate white gloves and unbox the Wii U himself, removing the console, holding the GamePad aloft, and (less exciting) unpacking various cables.

Nintendo's new console Wii U will be released in North America on November 18, Europe on November 30, and in Japan on December 8.

Amazon Posts $274 Million Loss in Q3 Earnings Report

Amazon announced a Q3 $274 million net loss in an earnings report today. The poor quarter is no surprise to anyone who followed the LivingSocial meltdown - which contributed to $169 million of that $274 million.

But perhaps the big news is how Amazon used the opportunity to slam the iPad Mini as an inferior device. Starting the section "Highlights" is a lengthy bulletlist, which compared both models of Amazon's Kindle Fire HDs to the iPad Mini.

While there's no hard and fast rule on how a company must report their earnings, starting their quarter highlights by taking a competitor's product to task seems like a weird choice. Why not celebrate the Kindle Fire HD's general release and reception? Also odd: where's the Kindle Fire HD's other competition on that list? Or are they genuinely not worried about the Nexus 7 as a competitor?

What do you think? Should Amazon stick to their own numbers, or is this a classic case of turning lemons into lemonade?

Deadpool Battles Some Dead Presidents

Today Marvel held the fourth in a week-long series of Next Big Thing press calls covering the various Marvel NOW! releases lined up for November. Today's call focused on the new volume of Deadpool from writers Brian Posehn and Gerry Duggan and artist Tony Moore. Duggan and Moore were present on the call, along with editor Jordan White.

With the first issue still a couple weeks away, the creators weren't able to reveal too much more than was discussed in our exclusive interview this past August. We'd recommend checking out that article for the full scoop on the new series. However, there were some interesting new tidbits revealed during the call.

Duggan explained how the initial story arc, wherein Deadpool does battle with a horde of reanimated, super-powered US Presidents, was designed to take advantage of the current election season. "We knew it was going to debut near Halloween during an election cycle. We wanted to open big with our Ghostbusters or Big Trouble in Little China -- some really big action thing that would also allow us to be funny. And Marvel agreed and said, 'That's how we should open it up'... We figured people are going to be sick of the election. Here's a way to have fun with the Presidents that wasn't political."

Duggan discussed how the zombie Presidents will be portrayed. "They've all sort of returned with their various strengths and weaknesses. Gerry Ford is a little bit of a stumblebum. JFK still has a weakness for the ladies." He also revealed that master huntsman Teddy Roosevelt will be a major threat to Deadpool in issue #2 and hinted that "Reagan finally gets to enjoy a little Star Wars later in the run." The zombie Presidents will be joined by at least one other historical figure, as the ghost of Benjamin Franklin is poised to play a major role in the arc.

The preview for issue #1 included below showcases a team-up between Deadpool and Thor. This is characteristic of the interaction Deadpool will have with various Marvel heroes in the series. Duggan said, "People will help him because the situation demands it, but they don't want to be seen doing it." Following Thor's guest role in issue #1, Doctor Strange will appear in issue #3.

Scroll below for preview art and cover images of the first two issues of the series, both of which are scheduled to ship in November. And we'll have plenty more Deadpool coverage next month.

LG Nexus 4 Specs and Release Date Leaked

LG's forthcoming Optimus G-based Nexus phone hasn't been leaked quite as thoroughly as the iPhone 5 was, but it's been no great secret either. Earlier today, the phone showed up for preorder at UK phone retailer Carphone Warehouse, and its legit-looking splash page (which has since been taken down) was consistent with the previously leaked specs.

The Nexus 4 was listed as having a quad-core Snapdragon CPU running Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, 2G of RAM, NFC, an 8-megapixel camera and a 4.7-inch 1280 x 768 display. The detailed specs list it as being 9.1mm thick.

One piece of bad news could mar the phone though: at least at at Carphone Warehouse, it looks like the Nexus 4 will only be available with a disappointing 8GB of onboard storage, without a microSD slot for expanding.

Google is expected to announce the Nexus 4, along with other products, at its Android event next Monday, October 29th. If Carphone Warehouse's information holds true, the phone will be available the very next day (Oct 30th).

Will you order a Nexus 4 if you can get it next week? Let us know in the comments.

Watch: Silent Era Batman Fan Film

This video has been floating around for a few years, so apologies if you've seen it already, but I noticed today that the short, pseudo Silent Era film Silent Shadow of the Bat-Man is getting a free screening tonight (with live music) as a Houston Public Radio Silent Film Concert.

Made by Andre Perkowski, the film utilizes footage from various classic silent films, including The Bat, The Man Who Laughs, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and more, and in the process pieces together a Batman film that never was from the 1920s. Very cool.

For those lucky enough to live in Houston, tonight's your night to see this with a crowd. The rest of us will have to just watch it on YouTube for now…

Sony Releases Mysterious New PlayStation Trailer

Today, Sony released a short, 16 second advertisement on the PlayStation YouTube channel. You can watch it below.

The woman seen at the desk in the story appears to be the same woman from the famous Michael Ad that Sony released last year, celebrating some of Sony’s characters and a gamer named Michael who assisted them all on their adventures.

The Michael ad was over two minutes long however, making this tease, called “The Reload,” far shorter. And there are some clues in the video that indicate what Sony could be teasing.

At the outset of the video, there are a couple of things worth nothing. There’s a clock on the wall next to the mysterious figure at the desk, with the PlayStation’s four controller symbols on it. Additionally, there’s a sign on the desk that says SARU! GET YOU!, a reference to Sony’s Ape Escape franchise.

But perhaps the biggest feature of the short clip is when the power goes out, and you hear that telltale electrical sound that indicates Cole from Infamous may be nearby. The woman at the desk looks up at whoever is there, almost disappointed, as she basks in the glow of the electricity.

The date shown at the end of the ad is October 23, 2012, which is the date the new PlayStation Store design is set to go live in North America. The title of the video, along with this date, would indicate that this is the most obvious answer to what the video is teasing.

However, the connection to the Michael ad could mean a continuation of that ad campaign, perhaps with the introduction of some new characters. Maybe it's even an early PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale teaser.

Then again, the fleeting hope of most of the PlayStation faithful -- however unlikely -- is that the allusion to Cole at the end means that we'll be hearing about a new Infamous game.
