It's been clear for a while that Jonathan Hickman's Avengers comics are building to something big in 2015. Marvel offered a hint of what that involves when they announced a new event comic with the familiar title of Secret Wars at NYCC last night. This yearlong storyline will re-team Hickman with artist Esad Ribic as they explore a clash between the Avengers and many heroes from across Marvel's multiverse. And in the tradition of the original Secret Wars series, this book will be accompanied by a massive multimedia blitz.
Time is Running Out for Marvel's Avengers Comics
Marvel didn't reveal many story details other than that Secret Wars spins out of the "Time Runs Out" storyline currently unfolding in both The Avengers and New Avengers. Secret Wars looks to be the endgame of Hickman's ongoing "World Incursion" conflict, as heroes go to war to ensure the survival of their respective worlds. This is a story the famously methodical writer has been planning since he began his Avengers run in 2012.
Marvel did reveal a montage from artist Alex Ross that hints at the scope of Secret Wars. The cover features the current Avengers battling numerous other heroes, including a classic, Silver Age-inspired Avengers team, Ultimate Spider-Man Miles Morales, Supreme Power's Hyperion, Iron Man 2020, Earth X's Spider-Girl, and plenty more.
The original Secret Wars was a yearlong, 12-issue event that debuted in 1984 and featured a giant lineup of Marvel heroes and villains forced to clash on Battleworld by the cosmic entity The Beyonder. That comic was accompanied by a Secret Wars action figure line from Mattel (the first time many of Marvel's characters had been given the toy treatment). It sounds like there will be plenty of Secret Wars-branded merchandise this time too. So far Marvel has confirmed partnerships with Hasbro, Gentle Giant, Upper Deck, Funko, and Hot Topic.
Marvel's Publisher Dan Buckley said that more announcements regarding the event and its tie-ins will be made leading up to the start of Secret Wars in May 2015. It remains to be seen how the event will affect the rest of the Avengers franchise. With the Avengers: Age of Ultron movie also debuting that month, we imagine Marvel will has plans for new Avengers titles in addition to Secret Wars and the previously announced Rage of Ultron graphic novel.
Stay tuned to IGN Comics for more news from NYCC throughout the weekend.
