The Campaign Heads Home in October

Just a few days ahead of the 2012 Presidential election, Warner Home Video will bring The Campaign to Blu-ray, DVD and Digital Download October 30. The political mudslinging comedy, from director Jay Roach, received mixed-to-negative reviews from critics (read our review here) and earned just over $85 million in the U.S.

Here's a synopsis of the picture, direct from Warner Bros., "When long-term congressman Cam Brady (Will Ferrell) commits a major public gaffe before an upcoming election, a pair of ultra-wealthy CEOs plot to put up a rival candidate and gain influence over their North Carolina district. Their man: naïve Marty Huggins (Zach Galifianakis), director of the local Tourism Center.

At first, Marty appears to be the unlikeliest possible choice but, with the help of his new benefactors' support, a cutthroat campaign manager and his family's political connections, he soon becomes a contender who gives the charismatic Cam plenty to worry about. As Election Day closes in, the two are locked in a dead heat, with insults quickly escalating to injury until all they care about is burying each other, in this mud-slinging, back-stabbing, home-wrecking comedy."

The Campaign will come to Blu-ray encoded in 1080p, mixed in 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio. The DVD will feature an anamorphic widescreen transfer and 5.1 Dolby Digital audio. The discs will include the following features:

  • Extended Cut with 11 hilarious minutes of added footage
  • Line-O-Rama
  • Deleted Scenes
  • Gag Reel
  • DVD Copy
  • Ultraviolet Copy

With the exception of the deleted scenes and UltraViolet copy of the film, bonus features are exclusive to either the single-disc Blu-ray or Blu-ray/DVD combo pack.

Suggested retail is set at $29.98 for the single-disc Blu-ray, $35.99 for the Blu-ray/DVD combo pack and $28.98 for the DVD. Amazon pre-orders are already available. Current prices are $20.99 for the single-disc Blu-ray, $25.19 for the Blu-ray combo pack, and $19.99 for the DVD.

Be on the lookout for a review of The Campaign on Blu-ray this October!

Sony Announces PSN Day 1 Digital Program

Sony has announced PSN Day 1 Digital, a program that offers titles for download on PlayStation Network the same day they’re available at retail. The program will launch on October 2nd, but players can pre-order games before they become available and PlayStation Plus members will get a 10% discount.

The following games have been announced for the program so far:

  • Resident Evil 6 (October 2 - $59.99)
  • NBA 2K13 (October 2 - $59.99/$53.99 for Plus members, with pre-order)*
  • Dishonored (October 9 - $59.99/$53.99 for Plus members, with pre-order)*
  • Doom 3: BFG Edition (October 16 - $39.99/$35.99 for Plus members, with pre-order)*
  • 007 Legends (October 16 - $59.99, 10% off week one for Plus members)
  • Medal Of Honor Warfighter (October 23 - $59.99)
  • Need For Speed: Most Wanted (October 30 - $59.99/$53.99 for Plus members, with pre-order)*
  • Assassin’s Creed III (October 30 - $59.99)*

* = Available for pre-order

“Our upcoming PSN Day 1 Digital lineup in October is exceptional and demonstrates our commitment to delivering the best games to the devoted PlayStation community as soon as they’re available,” said SCEA digital platforms senior director Jack Buser. “Additionally, with our new PlayStation 3 models on the horizon offering up to 500GB of storage, there’s never been a better time to experience PS3 games digitally through PSN.”

This strategy has been in place since day one on Vita, and Sony just recently made Borderlands 2 available on PSN day 1. In that case, the game wasn’t available at midnight, launching later in the day instead when the PlayStation Store was updated.

There’s no word on if midnight releases will be a part of PlayStation’s digital pre-order future, but read what we want in a PlayStation Store redesign for that feature and more that we’d like to see Sony add.

Instacube Puts Your Photo Stream on Display

"Digital photo frame" displays have been around for a long time. You probably bought one for your parents in like 2005, and since then it's probably been playing back the same thirty pictures you loaded onto it for them, collecting dust on a shelf.

The developers of the Instacube want to change that. Over at Kickstarter, a pledge of $99 to $149 will reserve your Instacube - a sleek, square display that integrates with Instagram to exhibit your photo stream live.

The Instacube (which thankfully isn't actually a cube) will be 7.5" square, housing a 6.5" square LCD display. In addition to the touch-capacitive screen, the housing features tactile buttons for controlling power and switching feeds, along with a heart shaped "Like" button. It comes with 4GB of internal storage, but it syncs with Instagram over WiFi, so it seems unlikely you'd ever fill it.

The Instacube's single-purpose interface (Insta-face?) is built on Android. It runs on a rechargeable lithium ion battery (the developers told IGN they're planning to include a USB port for charging), so you can take your friends' breakfast pics wherever you go.

The only thing we weren't blown away by is the display's resolution: 600x600 isn't terrible - in fact, it's competitive with similarly priced devices, and Instagram pictures currently max out at 612x612 pixels anyway - but it isn't future-proof either. Plus, Instagram's normalized aspect ratio will banish the ugly-black-bar effect of squeezing vertical photos into a horizontal display.

It's worth noting that the device will require access to Instagram's API. While that's not necessarily cause for alarm, if Instagram's Facebook overlords were to revoke API access for some reason, the device would become an expensive paperweight just like that.

As of writing, the Instacube is about a third of the way to its $250,000 funding goal on its first day.
