Nintendo Network ID Tied to Individual Wii U Consoles

Nintendo has confirmed that your Nintendo Network account can only be used on the console it was created on, at least for now.

In a post over on the Nintendo Support site, the company revealed that there is currently no way to sign into your account on a friend's console or transfer it to a new Wii U should yours break, though this will change at some stage.

“

In the future, you will be able to use your Nintendo Network Account with future Nintendo consoles and other devices, such as PC's.

"A Nintendo Network Account can only be used on the console where it was created," the entry reads. "In the future, you will be able to use your Nintendo Network Account with future Nintendo consoles and other devices, such as PC's."

In the interim though, this means if you're unfortunate enough to have your shiny new console die on you then you're set to lose all game progress, Miiverse posts and console settings.

Hopefully this will change soon, as Nintendo has made clear it's planning on rolling the Nintendo Network out to the 3DS as well. It's interesting to speculate what the ability to log in on PC could mean though. Whilst highly unlikely, we mused last week about the significance of the company releasing its first paid-for iOS app in Japan. Could the ability to log into your Nintendo Network account on a PC be the first step in accessing a wider range of Nintendo's back catalogue in app form?

Probably not. But we can dream...

Community Cast Celebrate Season 4 Debuting... Someday!

If things had gone as originally planned, the Season 4 premiere of Community would be airing tonight on NBC. But last week, the network decided to hold off on bringing the series back, with its actual date as yet undetermined.

While Community fans wait to find out when we'll actually see the Greendale gang, the cast of Community have filmed this new video celebrating their premiere date on October 19th... That won't be on October 19th.

New Young Justice, Green Lantern Episodes Abruptly Pushed to 2013

Fans looking for new episodes of Young Justice and Green Lantern: The Animated Series on Cartoon Network's DC Nation block this past Saturday were sorely disappointed when they tuned in to find nothing of the kind (instead episodes of Dragons: Riders of Berk aired in their stead).

What at first seemed like a mix-up on the network's part soon became much more bizarre when it was revealed that CN had abruptly pulled the entire DC Nation block of programming (which also includes those great little Superhero Shorts) from their schedule until January, 2013. This move comes only three weeks after Young Justice and Green Lantern had returned from an almost four-month-long hiatus. So this means only two new episodes of each show will have aired in more than six months by the time we get to the new year. Huh?

Cartoon Network and Warner Bros. have been mum on the situation, offering no explanation for the sudden move aside from this strangely cheery tweet from CN: "Hey #DCNation fans! Have you heard?? DC Nation will return in January with all new episodes!" No, we had certainly not heard that… (The DC Comics Facebook page offered a similarly brief message about a January return, and when we reached out to our sources all we got were similarly one-sentenced responses.)

Some have speculated that Cartoon Network wants to hold the new episodes for the station's 20th anniversary or perhaps for the launch of the upcoming Beware The Batman. As IGN TV's Executive Editor Eric Goldman points out, the huge success of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on Nick has sucked viewers away from CN -- though TMNT airs at 11, which is when DC Nation ends, so are kids just suddenly watching Nick all morning? Seems unlikely.

It must be said that Cartoon Network, DC and Warner Bros. are all corporate siblings, so it doesn't make sense to think that CN would not care about or have a reason to be dismissive of Young Justice and Green Lantern. The abruptness of the movie is just very strange, and it certainly doesn't help the programs themselves -- especially Young Justice which is very arc-heavy and dense with scores of characters to follow. When the show takes these long hiatuses (which it unfortunately has done on several occasions now), it becomes that much more difficult for fans to jump back in.

Interestingly, a teaser for the remainder of Young Justice Season 2 could be spotted at the DC booth at New York Comic-Con this weekend. That video has now found its way online and can be seen right here:

But wait! For now, anyway, you can (legally) download via iTunes what should've been this week's episode of Young Justice ("Before the Dawn"). The Green Lantern: TAS episode ("Steam Lantern") is harder to find, though one of the show's producers, Giancarlo Volpe, has provided some details via his Twitter (@giancarlo_volpe) on how to locate it. Why these episodes were made available this way is unclear, unless Cartoon Network's pulling them from airing was so abrupt that they simply slipped through the cracks.

Also, a petition has shown up here that seeks to get the episodes on the air before January.

So expect IGN's reviews on those iTunes episodes soon, but beyond that… well, I guess we all know what we're doing in 2013.

PlayStation Network Maintenance Monday

Sony's going to be tightening some bolts and dusting some servers Monday, October 15th, so aspects of the PlayStation Network will be down. From 4 a.m. to 4 p.m. Pacific (7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Eastern), the PSN will be under construction.

Sony says: "If you’ve signed onto PSN over the past few days, you’ll still be able to play online and access apps during this period, but you may receive a maintenance notification when attempting to access the PlayStation Store, PlayStation Home, and Account Management as these services will be unavailable. Be sure to sign in now if you wish to access the Network during this maintenance window."

Could this maintenance be prepping for the new PlayStation Store?

So, although you'll miss dancing with your bubble machine in Home, a simple sign-in now should keep you gaming during the work.

Sony Announces PSN Day 1 Digital Program

Sony has announced PSN Day 1 Digital, a program that offers titles for download on PlayStation Network the same day they’re available at retail. The program will launch on October 2nd, but players can pre-order games before they become available and PlayStation Plus members will get a 10% discount.

The following games have been announced for the program so far:

  • Resident Evil 6 (October 2 - $59.99)
  • NBA 2K13 (October 2 - $59.99/$53.99 for Plus members, with pre-order)*
  • Dishonored (October 9 - $59.99/$53.99 for Plus members, with pre-order)*
  • Doom 3: BFG Edition (October 16 - $39.99/$35.99 for Plus members, with pre-order)*
  • 007 Legends (October 16 - $59.99, 10% off week one for Plus members)
  • Medal Of Honor Warfighter (October 23 - $59.99)
  • Need For Speed: Most Wanted (October 30 - $59.99/$53.99 for Plus members, with pre-order)*
  • Assassin’s Creed III (October 30 - $59.99)*

* = Available for pre-order

“Our upcoming PSN Day 1 Digital lineup in October is exceptional and demonstrates our commitment to delivering the best games to the devoted PlayStation community as soon as they’re available,” said SCEA digital platforms senior director Jack Buser. “Additionally, with our new PlayStation 3 models on the horizon offering up to 500GB of storage, there’s never been a better time to experience PS3 games digitally through PSN.”

This strategy has been in place since day one on Vita, and Sony just recently made Borderlands 2 available on PSN day 1. In that case, the game wasn’t available at midnight, launching later in the day instead when the PlayStation Store was updated.

There’s no word on if midnight releases will be a part of PlayStation’s digital pre-order future, but read what we want in a PlayStation Store redesign for that feature and more that we’d like to see Sony add.

Seriously This Time: Grand Theft Auto III PSN-Bound This Week

Rockstar and Sony were set to release Grand Theft Auto III on PlayStation Network back in July. But the day the PS2 Classic version of GTA3 was set to come to the PSN in North America, it was unceremoniously delayed for reasons unknown.

While we still don’t quite know what happened to delay GTA3’s release at the last minute, we know now that Grand Theft Auto III is scheduled once again to be released on the PlayStation Network as a PS2 Classic. Its price is unknown, although chances are it will cost the same price as every other PS2 Classic: $9.99. Its release timing in other territories is also unknown.

Grand Theft Auto III originally came to PlayStation 2 in the fall of 2001. Widely considered one of the most influential games ever released, GTA3 was one of PS2's best-selling games.

Last Resort: "Pilot" Review

Note: Some spoilers follow for Last Resort – basically the same plot points revealed by the network in trailers for the past few months. But keep in mind, you can watch the full pilot online now, before it debuts on ABC.

Shawn Ryan has more than proven his TV mettle at this point, having given us the awesomeness of The Shield, while in recent years delivering terrific (even when frustratingly ratings-challenged) programming like Terriers and The Chicago Code.

All of which is to say, Ryan’s involvement immediately had me interested in Last Resort, the new ABC series he created with Karl Gajdusek (Dead Like Me). And the very happy news is, wow, does this show deliver. Last Resort is easily fall’s best new TV series.

Andre Braugher stars as Captain Marcus Chaplin, commander of the nuclear submarine the Colorado. When Chaplin is confronted with that horrific moment where he’s actually given orders to fire his nukes on Pakistan, the highly suspicious circumstances of the orders doesn’t sit right with either him or his XO, Sam Kendal (Scott Speedman). Chaplin’s instincts are correct, and his refusal to carry out the order without more information suddenly makes him and his crew enemies of the state, with their lives on the line.

With more than one crew member shocked (if not filled with outright rage) at his decisions, Chaplin impulsively takes the sub to a small, inhabited island – creating a new home base for all onboard, while they try to sort out why these insane turn of events have occurred and who is behind them.

Martin Campbell directed the pilot to Last Resort, and the action veteran brings to the proceedings the intensity and skill he gave Bond films GoldenEye and Casino Royale – giving the show a big, appropriately intense vibe almost from the start.

If I have any quibble about the Last Resort pilot it is that it does feel almost too jam-packed – if any series could have benefited from an old school two-hour “event” premiere episode, it would be this one. For instance, we might have spent a bit more time on the Colorado as the crew goes through a normal routine, as the episode, in the interest of brevity, begins with them rescuing a team of Navy SEALs (who are being suspiciously tightlipped about their own mission), and at first it’s easy to feel a bit out of sorts about what exactly is going on.

Overall though, Ryan, Gajdusek and Campbell are to be highly commended for efficiently and effectively conveying so much in just 44 minutes. Even with the limited time they have, they distinctly establish the characters and relationships on the Colorado before the true crisis begins, from Sam’s longing to get home to his wife, Christine (Jessy Schram), to the struggle the sub’s third in command, Lieutenant Grace Shepard (Daisy Betts), has establishing authority among certain members of the crew, thanks both to her gender and to her powerful Admiral father (Bruce Davison), who some feel helped secure her position.

The cast are excellent, with Braugher bringing exactly the right feel of leadership, intelligence and cunning to the role of Chaplin. We have to believe that Chaplin is a man with a long, honorable history in the military -- that his decision to not fire when ordered to do so would not be one he’d make lightly -- and Braugher is exactly the right actor to portray that history and someone who has to handle so much weight on his shoulders without crumbling under the pressure.

With just a couple of big scenes each, for the most part, plenty of other cast members quickly establish fertile ground to build upon – including Autumn Reeser as Kylie Sinclair, a D.C. power player who has a vested business interest in what’s happening on the Colorado, but is not simply the ice cold opportunist she appears to be; Daniel Lissing as one of those aforementioned Navy SEALs hiding secrets of his own; and Dichen Lachman, Sophie Girard and Sahr Ngaujah as residents of the island the Colorado arrives at, who quickly have to make some big adjustments to their lives.

An alum of Ryan’s previous military-based series, The Unit, Robert Patrick, is great as Master Chief Joseph Prosser, conveying a complicated mixture of character traits, as Prosser is clearly old fashioned and rigid, but also doing what he feels is right through and through…. In what is possibly a combustible combination.

Last Resort has such a tense, “How will this be resolved?!” scenario, it’s hard not to also wonder, “How do you sustain this for several years?”, if it finds its deserving success. But the pilot feels so confident and powerful, I’m more curious than concerned when it comes to answering that second question.

It’s rare to have a truly terrific pilot episode. By their very nature, they are just chapter one in what’s meant to be a long story - burdened with establishing the overall situation and filled with exposition and introductions. Last Resort stands out as one of those shows that grabs your attention from the get go and delivers a tricky balance of strong character beats and big action set pieces. Don’t miss this one.

Last Resort premieres Thursday, September 27th at 8pm on ABC.

Terraria Headed to XBLA, PSN

505 Games has announced that side-scrolling block builder Terraria will be released on consoles. Set to hit Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network, Terraria will be released in early 2013 with “an emphasis on crafting and exploration set in vast and vibrant worlds.”

Terraria is described by 505 as “a side-scrolling, action-adventure sandbox game” that’s “more than a mere block building game” where “players’ experience is limited only by their own imaginations.” More than 1.6 million copies of the PC version have been sold to date.

“I can’t say how excited I am to finally have Terraria come to Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 system! To see it come so far is a complete shock, especially after such humble beginnings,” said Terraria creator Andrew Spinks. “It’s always been my dream to have as many people as possible know and enjoy Terraria as much as I have and this is another big step in that direction. It’s been awesome working with 505 Games and I can’t wait for everyone to see the additional features that they’ve been able to bring to this new edition of the game.”

Terraria was originally released on PC in May 2011. For more, read our Terraria review and why Terraria is a better game than Minecraft.

Call of Juarez: Gunslinger Announced

Ubisoft has announced Call of Juarez: Gunslinger. Set to hit Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network and PC in early 2013, Gunslinger “is a real homage to the Wild West tales” that lets players “live the epic and violent journey of a ruthless bounty hunter onto the trail of the West’s most notorious outlaws.” Like previous entries in the franchise, Gunslinger is being developed by Techland.

Ubisoft says Gunslinger will unveil “the untold truth behind some of the greatest legends of the Old West,” including Billy the Kid, Pat Garrett, Jesse James and more. The game will feature “ruthless, all out gun battles” and lets players use pistols and rifles to “unleash lethal combos” and “gun down multiple enemies in split seconds.” Players will also be able to choose specific gun fighting skills and “develop and acquire new shooting abilities to become the West’s finest gunslinger.”

Ubisoft hinted at a new Call of Juarez just yesterday via a teaser image. This will be the fourth game in the franchise, following Call of Juarez in 2007, Bound in Blood in 2009 and The Cartel in 2011.

No additional details on Call of Juarez: Gunslinger have been released, but keep an eye on the franchise’s official Facebook page for more info.

J.J. Abrams and Fringe's J.H. Wyman Developing New Futuristic Drama for FOX

With FOX's Fringe approaching its conclusion, J.J. Abrams, the network and one of the show's main creative forces are teaming up once again for a new futuristic drama series.

Deadline reports that FOX has picked up the Bad Robot project with a pilot production commitment. The show is described as "an action-packed buddy cop show, set in the near future, when all LAPD officers are partnered with highly evolved human-like androids." Fringe's executive producer and showrunner, J.H. Wyman, is penning the script, with Abrams, Wyman, Bryan Burk and Kathy Lingg executive producing.

This marks the second series pick-up this season to focus on robot/human coexistence; NBC recently picked up a script deal from Homeland executive producer Howard Gordon and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles' EP Josh Friedman.

Ratchet: Deadlocked Headed to PS3

At PAX today, Ratchet: Deadlocked was confirmed to be headed to PlayStation 3 later this year. Deadlocked will be released in HD as a download on PlayStation Network and will include reworked online multiplayer.

Ratchet: Deadlocked was originally released in 2005 and focuses on battle as opposed to the platforming elements of earlier Ratchet & Clank games. Sony hasn’t provided specific details about pricing, release date or new features, but we’ve reached out for more information and will update this story when we hear back.

Deadlocked follows HD versions of three other Ratchet & Clank games in the Ratchet & Clank Collection, which was released last week in North America and includes Ratchet & Clank, Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando and Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal. A new game, Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault, is set to hit both PlayStation 3 and Vita.

For more on Ratchet: Deadlocked, you can read our original review of the PlayStation 2 version from 2005.
