Wolverine #313 Review

The last thing Wolverine needs is a more complicated back-story, and that's precisely what Sabretooth Reborn has saddled him with. Wolverine #312 dropped the revelation that the Weapon X program was actually Wolverine's idea all along. Issue #313 wraps up Jeph Loeb's return to the franchise, and it's every bit as underwhelming as the three issues that preceded it.

For one thing, it's a bit startling how little a story called Sabretooth Reborn has actually featured Sabretooth. Even in the finale, the character has little relevance other than as a sidekick to Romulus. The notion that he spent his time in hiding training and becoming a tactical genius is never reflected in his behavior or characterization. This issue merely offers a handful of fight scenes between the three characters and a flashback or two to the Weapon X days. The same cliched fight dialogue continues to run rampant. In the flashbacks, Loeb never elaborates enough on why Wolverine was motivated to transform himself or why he was perfectly happy to commit casual murder in the lead-up to that transformation. Nor does this issue offer much resolution to any of the plot threads or character conflicts.

At least Simone Bianchi's art has its appeal. As mentioned in past reviews, his work really benefits from the shift towards more traditional page layouts. His character designs are sometimes overly androgynous, but there's a nice fluidity to the action sequences.

We've already seen other Wolverine-centric stories pick up where Loeb is now leaving off in terms of Sabretooth's return. Loeb leaves plenty more open for either himself or another writer to continue with. But considering that Romulus and his conspiracies have done nothing but dilute and complicate Wolverine's mythology so far, that prospect is not at all enticing.

Sony Announces PSN Day 1 Digital Program

Sony has announced PSN Day 1 Digital, a program that offers titles for download on PlayStation Network the same day they’re available at retail. The program will launch on October 2nd, but players can pre-order games before they become available and PlayStation Plus members will get a 10% discount.

The following games have been announced for the program so far:

  • Resident Evil 6 (October 2 - $59.99)
  • NBA 2K13 (October 2 - $59.99/$53.99 for Plus members, with pre-order)*
  • Dishonored (October 9 - $59.99/$53.99 for Plus members, with pre-order)*
  • Doom 3: BFG Edition (October 16 - $39.99/$35.99 for Plus members, with pre-order)*
  • 007 Legends (October 16 - $59.99, 10% off week one for Plus members)
  • Medal Of Honor Warfighter (October 23 - $59.99)
  • Need For Speed: Most Wanted (October 30 - $59.99/$53.99 for Plus members, with pre-order)*
  • Assassin’s Creed III (October 30 - $59.99)*

* = Available for pre-order

“Our upcoming PSN Day 1 Digital lineup in October is exceptional and demonstrates our commitment to delivering the best games to the devoted PlayStation community as soon as they’re available,” said SCEA digital platforms senior director Jack Buser. “Additionally, with our new PlayStation 3 models on the horizon offering up to 500GB of storage, there’s never been a better time to experience PS3 games digitally through PSN.”

This strategy has been in place since day one on Vita, and Sony just recently made Borderlands 2 available on PSN day 1. In that case, the game wasn’t available at midnight, launching later in the day instead when the PlayStation Store was updated.

There’s no word on if midnight releases will be a part of PlayStation’s digital pre-order future, but read what we want in a PlayStation Store redesign for that feature and more that we’d like to see Sony add.

Rockstar Updates Old GTA San Andreas Site

An old viral website for GTA: San Andreas has been updated by Rockstar, leading to speculation that viral marketing for GTA V could be about to begin.

The Epsilon program site has been live since GTA: San Andreas launched back in 2004, but hasn't seen any updates in years. Checking the site today reveals the same promises of power for money it's always had, alongside a Twitter feed that wasn't there before July 24.

Only two tweets have been sent so far, one on July 25 and the other on July 30. The first reads "We as a people have consistently got things backwards. #KIFFLOM", while the second says "Seeking without paying is not living, it is living on the cheap. #KIFFLOM".

Checking out the other viral sites registered back when San Andreas released shows that none of them have been updated, though www.westcoastraplegends.com now sends you straight through to Rockstar's main site.

Despite Take Two yesterday refusing to be drawn on a release date for the game, they did say that "substantial progress" was being made. If the marketing machine is starting to fire up, then hopefully we won't have too long to go before more concrete launch details appear.

Thanks, OPM.

A Story About My Uncle…and Grappling Beams

Created by a group of 11 students in Södertörns Högskola’s game program, A Story of My Uncle lets you soar across vast alien spaces using a grappling beam. After a brief introductory sequence it gets right to the point, dropping you onto magical floating platforms and challenging you to long-jump and swing your way to safety in search of your missing uncle.

It’s rough in spots, but the exhilarating flow of movement as you soar over deadly chasms more than makes up for the flaws. It’s also free: you can find a download link on A Story About My Uncle’s site.

Did you play it? What did you think?
