RoboCop, Elysium Release Dates Changed

Sony has moved the release dates of their two big, upcoming sci-fi movies. The RoboCop reboot has been moved from August 9, 2013 to February 7, 2014, where it opens against DreamWorks' adaptation of the EA video game Need for Speed and Warners' Lego Movie.

11 Projects Have Earned $1 Million on Kickstarter this Year

Kickstarter has revealed statistics for game-related projects through August 31st, referring to this year as the “Year of the Game.” According to Kickstarter, eight of the 11 projects that crossed $1 million this year were related to games (seven were games, one was a comic about a game), and more money has been put into game projects than any other category in 2012. Games earned $50 million through August 31st, compared to $42 million for film, $40 million for design, $25 million for music and $16 million for technology.

Games have gone from the eighth most-funded category in Kickstarter history to the second most-funded, earning $50,330,275 in 2012 compared to $48,190 in 2009. Overall, 23% of all money pledged to Kickstarter in 2012 has been for games, compared to only 3.6% last year. “Of the 36 projects that have raised more than $500,000 this year, 20 have been games,” Kickstarter noted.

Kickstarter largely credits the success of Double Fine’s campaign with the sudden interest in games, commenting “The gaming world hasn’t looked at Kickstarter the same way since. Double Fine signaled to game developers that they could use Kickstarter to do something that previously seemed impossible: make the game they wanted without outside interference.” Game projects have noticeably increased since Double Fine’s campaign launched in February.

People who back game projects are also Kickstarter’s most frequent recurring backers, funding an average of 2.43 projects compared to 1.78 projects for backers in other categories. “Game projects have brought game backers who have inspired more game projects that have brought even more backers, and so on.”

The statistics include both subcategories of Games: Board & Card Games and Video Games. While video games have grown the most, Kickstarter notes a marked success for board & card games as well, which have earned more than $15 million in 2012.

Game projects continue to thrive on Kickstarter even outside these categories, with recent successes including Fangamer’s game-inspired Retrowear clothing campaign, Nathan Meunier’s guide for freelance video game journalists and the Gaymercon LGBT gaming and tech convention.

Bastion Comes to iPad

Bastion developer Supergiant Games announced that its smash-hit action-RPG is coming to iPad tomorrow, August 30 for just $4.99. Apple launches apps on a county-by-country basis, so gamers in New Zealand and some other territories can grab the title now.

IGN awarded Bastion a 9 / 10 “Editor’s Choice” designation in our original Xbox Live Arcade & PC reviews. Reviewer Greg Miller specifically praised the game’s gorgeous watercolor style, its often-parodied narrator, and its excellent design that keeps the player wondering what will come next.

In a lengthy FAQ on its website, Supergiant has revealed plenty of details about the iOS port. The iPad version’s default controls allow players to simply tap to move. Double-tapping executes an evasive roll, and The Kid attacks automatically when enemies are in range. A “classic control” option is also available for players that prefer a virtual joystick & buttons.

The iPad port doesn’t include any new story content (beyond integrating the Stranger’s Dream DLC), but it does feature Game Center achievements and support for the new iPad’s Retina Display screen. The previous version’s “No-Sweat Mode” has also been converted into an infinite lives option, for gamers that just want to run through the adventure stress-free.

Bastion on iOS for now only supports iPad 2 and newer devices.

IGN will have more on this high-profile iPad port very soon.

Jet Set Willy 360 Release Date

The classic ZX Spectrum game Jet Set Willy is to be relaunched as Jet Set Willy 360 on Xbox 360.

The game will become available on August 24 as an Xbox Live Indie game available on Xbox Live. A Windows Phone version will also be released on the same date.

Jet Set Willy is the sequel to 1983's Manic Miner, and tasks you with tidying up Willy's house following a huge party in order to gain access to his bedroom. The game arrives courtesy of developer Elite Systems, who is apparently also considering bringing more classic re-releases to Microsoft's console.

Elite MD Steve Wilcox explained, "The release of Jet Set Willy 360 as an Xbox Live Indie Game and as a Windows Phone game is the next exciting step in bringing classic ZX Spectrum games to a new audience, via new devices and platforms and in the process restoring some order to the market.

"We began doing this some 22 months ago with our ZX Spectrum: Elite Collection Apps for iOS devices and in the intervening period there have been more than 100,000 paid instances. The release of Jet Set Willy 360 follows the positive reception and a successful launch of Manic Miner 360 as an Xbox Live Indie Game and as a Windows Phone game. It’s expected to be followed by more classic ZX Spectrum Games."

Dust 514 Expands EVE Integration, Supports Keyboard/Mouse

CCP has announced new improvements coming to Dust 514’s “Precursor” closed beta update on August 21st, calling it a “major milestone” in the game’s journey toward open beta. According to a post from executive producer Brandon Laurino on the PlayStation Blog, Dust is no longer running on a standalone test server but has instead migrated to EVE Online’s long-standing Singularity test server, known as “Sisi.” Thanks to the move, Dust players will be able to exchange in-game mail and chat in real time with EVE Online players.

Precursor brings a new “Instant Battle” option to matchmaking to jump quickly into battles, and also tweaks the matchmaking system to “intelligently place solo players and squads into matches based on skill.” The first framework has also been introduced for Orbital Strikes, which allow players to call in attacks from the warships above battle when they achieve certain conditions. “This is just the first level of Orbital Strike capability,” Laurino wrote. “In the near future, players on the ground in Dust 514 will be able to request strikes from ships piloted by EVE Online players. These strikes have the potential to do far more damage than the War Barge, their accuracy and power determined by factors like your Dust 514 Merc’s skills and what turrets the EVE Online pilots have trained and fit to their spaceships.”

In addition, new environments have been introduced. “Precursor brings our Galaxy system online, which assembles maps from components based on planetary attributes and what is built on the planet, for tons of potential combinations,” Laurino explained.” The update will also add the ability to use a USB keyboard and mouse, joining the DualShock and Move control options already available. Laurino notes that controller-based filters will make their way to Instant Battle and matchmaking in a future update.

Updates will continue to be rolled out for Dust, adding additional improvements to the game before it launches for all PS3 owners. A Vita companion app called Neocom will also launch, “to augment your gameplay experience and let you customize your fittings, train skills, use the market, browse the starmap, and much more, on the go anytime and anywhere.”

Beta sign-ups are still available on Dust 514’s official site. For an idea of what you can expect from the game, check out our impressions.

Report: The Last Guardian Trademark ‘Abandoned’

Listings suggest that the trademark for Sony’s long-in-development The Last Guardian has become “abandoned.” According to a status update on Trademarkia, “On Monday, August 6, 2012, status on the The Last Guardian trademark changed to Abandoned - No Statement of Use Filed.”

The Last Guardian was originally announced way back in 2009 and has continually been delayed since. It was originally set for holiday 2011 then pushed into 2012 last year. Executive producer Yoshifusa Hayama left Sony and was soon followed by creator Fumito Ueda.

Ueda said he was “committed to completing” the game in a freelance capacity and while rumors briefly indicated that the game had been canceled, Sony later reported it was still “making progress.”

After missing TGS 2011 and being absent from E3 2012, we last heard from Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida that The Last Guardian is “still in development.”

We’ve reached out to Sony for comment about the trademark and will update with any comment we receive. For more on The Last Guardian, listen to our thoughts on Podcast Beyond.

Codemasters Teases Grid 2

A new trailer has strongly hinted that Grid 2 is on its way. And the trailer's website – www.theracereturns.com – promises that more information will arrive on August 8th.

The trailer keeps things pretty cryptic, with shots a car, a set of spinning wheels, and lots of smoke, before revealing a logo bearing the number 2. But all signs point towards a sequel to Grid, Codemasters' 2008 reboot of the TOCA series. Since 2008, the racing-focused publisher has released two installments of its popular Dirt franchise. Is Grid 2 just around the bend?

GaymerCon: The First LGBT Gaming Convention

GaymerCon, the first convention focused on LGBT geek culture, will debut on August 3rd, 2013. The event will take place in San Francisco, CA, and will celebrate under-represented groups in the gaming realm while also illuminating the presence of alternative sexualities both inside and outside the digital space.

"The goal of GaymerCon is to create a space where geek identified LGBT people can come together and build community," says GaymerCon Director of PR Benjamin Williams. GaymerCon Director Matt Conn also comments: "Historically, there has been very little content with LGBT themes or options in video games and other geek media. We hope to show the world that this audience not only exists, but is flourishing."

The organizers of GaymerCon are currently seeking funding through a Kickstarter campaign. The current goal, $25,000, will help the organizers secure a venue in San Francisco as well as produce more programming for the convention. At the time this article was written, an impressive $8,695 has already been raised with a full 29 days remaining.

Gamers interested in attending GaymerCon can contribute $30 to the Kickstarter campaign to reserve a two-day pass to the event, which will save attendees 5 to 10 dollars off the presale/door price. And according to the campaign home page, the organizers will "...turn you into a robot or something" with a $700 pledge!
