Channel Surfing Podcast, Episode 184

Hey guys, Eric here for an actual brand new episode of Channel Surfing - Not one recorded two and a half weeks ago!

Laura Prudom from the Huffington Post joins me again as guest co-host, as we play some major catch up with the not-at-all-new news that Clark Gregg is starring as Agent Phil Coulson in S.H.I.E.L.D. – though we have actual recent news too, with Ming-Na Wen joining him in the ABC pilot!

Then there’s the bizarre situation with Up All Night, as NBC retools the series into a multi-camera sitcom. Plus, Dan Harmon’s new animated series gets the greenlight at Adult Swim, while G4 pulls the plug on Attack of the Show and X-Play.

We then discuss Arrow getting a full season order and our spoilery discussion on the show’s first three episodes, from 26:15-32:10 – followed by a “Watch Nikita!” rant and news about Seth Green on How I Met Your Mother, the lead being cast in Shawn Ryan’s Beverly Hills Cop, a potential Twilight TV series (sigh…) and Frank Darabont getting a greenlight for his new TNT LA Noir series. Plus, what the hell happened to DC Nation?

Reader email brings us an Arrow-related question about secret identities, followed by a spoilery Fringe chat (for what’s aired so far) from 57:30-1:02:00 and a Legend of Korra Emmy query.

More Nostalgia-Laden Angry Birds Star Wars Teasers Released

Rovio continues to make full use of the Star Wars brand to promote its upcoming mash-up Angry Birds Star Wars. Following the initial "That's No Moon!" teaser trailer the Finnish mobile game maker has released two more teasers that re-use footage from the original Star Wars trilogy in... interesting ways:

These teasers are still lacking any kind of detail on how Angry Birds Star Wars actually plays. Hopefully we'll have an opportunity to see the game itself in motion before it launches. Angry Birds Star Wars is due out for PC, Mac, iOS, Android and Windows Phone on November 8.

American Horror Story: Asylum is Here!

On the heels of winning two Emmys last month for its first season (among seventeen nominations), American Horror Story returns Wednesday night for a brand new story, American Horror Story: Asylum.

Completely unconnected storywise to the first season, Asylum does feature several returning cast members playing totally different roles, including Zachary Quinto, Lily Rabe, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters and Jessica Lange - the latter of whom won a Golden Globe and an Emmy for her work in the first season. They are joined by several newcomers, including Chloe Sevigny (Big Love), James Cromwell (Babe, LA Confidential), Joseph Fiennes (FlashForward) and Adam Levine (yep, the Maroon 5 guy!), in the story of an asylum in 1964 where some very twisted things are occurring, involving both humans and... otherwise. It was also just announced that Ian McShane (Deadwood, Kings) will be appearing in two episodes.

American Horror Story amassed quite a following last year, even while some felt the show -- from Nip/Tuck and Glee's Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk -- was too over the top. With the new season and a completely new storyline here, we wondered, will you be checking it out? Let us know in our poll below!

American Horror Story: Asylum premieres Wednesday, October 17th at 10pm on FX.

Sony Exec: “I Feel Great About What’s Coming”

The PlayStation brand is in an interesting period of flux right now. PlayStation Vita is failing to pick up significant momentum, but PlayStation 3 -- led by a new, hard drive-heavy model -- is slowly closing the worldwide sales gap with Xbox 360. And a slew of PlayStation-exclusive games, long the strength of the brand, are on the horizon even as Sony has significantly truncated its roster of first party studios in 2012, from 15 to 12.

I recently got the opportunity to speak with Sony’s John Koller about all of these topics and more, and SCEA’s Vice President of Hardware Marketing had plenty of interesting things to say.

On the precipice of 64 million PS3s sold worldwide, Koller admitted that the company is “very pleased with the PlayStation 3,” reiterating the company’s stance that Sony intends on staying “in the PS3 business” for “quite a long time.” Discussing fresh upcoming IP from the likes of Naughty Dog and Quantic Dream in the form of The Last of Us and Beyond: Two Souls, respectively, Koller declared that “the development spigot is very strong for the platform.”

Interestingly, Koller points at the fierce loyalty Sony has from its consumers as a reason why PlayStation 3 will continue to be successful. “When you look at the consumer for the PS3, it remains someone who’s a fairly heavily engaged gamer. There’s a lot of research showing that the PS3 consumer spends the most time of any consumer on the console. The PS3 consumer also spends a lot. They spend a lot of time and they spend a lot of money. It’s a consumer that’s very valuable. For us, we certainly regard them very highly.”

Koller also noted that while they pay attention to their primary competitor’s sales numbers in the form of Microsoft’s Xbox 360, it’s not something that dictates their decisions. “We certainly do look at [Xbox 360’s sales] numbers… From an internal standpoint, we’re very aware of what’s happening in the market and what’s happening with PS3. We pay attention. But we set out a strategy well in advance of month-to-month or week-to-week numbers that flow back in, either globally or even locally from retail accounts.”

With the new PlayStation 3 on the market, I inquired with Koller if he was afraid of some consumer confusion. After all, adding multiple new SKUs is one thing, but making them more expensive than what was already out is another thing entirely. “As far as customer confusion, we haven’t seen that. What we have done is try to educate based on not only the design of the new chassis, but also the size of the new hard drive. That’s becoming increasingly important. We see both new consumers coming to our platform as well as existing consumers that have purchased a second one. They’re starting to tap out the amount of digital space they have.”

Koller also refused to talk about PlayStation 3’s successor when asked if PS3 and the next PlayStation will live side by side on the market.

The conversation turned to the PlayStation Vita, to which I pressed Koller bluntly on its poor sales, and what seems to be an insistence from Sony that Vita is doing just fine contrary to evidence suggesting otherwise. “It’s selling on target, so everything that you’ve heard from our execs is true,” he said. “We certainly entered the next-gen version of the dedicated handheld market with eyes wide open. We knew that this is a very challenging market. There’s certainly competition from tablets and mobile and other things that provides a challenge to the entire dedicated handheld market, not just something that we would enter.”

“But we did then and we do now feel very confident and very bullish on the platform, for a variety of reasons. First is, again, going to what I mentioned on the console side, the content. The content coming to Vita, not only this holiday… [but] what we’re seeing over the next few years for Vita keeps that development spigot hot.”

One of the major strengths of PlayStation Vita, according to Koller, is how ubiquitous the user base is with that of PS3’s most hardcore players. “We haven’t gone into the numbers publicly,” Koller admitted, “but I can tell you that a significant majority, as in most, of the Vita consumers are also PS3 owners. When we look at that, those are people we know very well. That’s a PlayStation Nation consumer who tends to be a loyalist. They buy multiple platforms from us. So we know their purchase behavior. We know the games they like. We know what makes them tick.”

At this point, discussion of the PS3’s ecosystem crossing over with the Vita’s came up. I often argue that Vita and PS3 are crossing over too much, removing reasons for folks to pick one up if they already own a PS3. “We try to keep unique experiences on each,” Koller said, later noting that “we did certainly have issues during the PSP years when we had the exact same games on both console and handheld. That’s something that’s a difficult thing for us. It’s difficult for a gamer to wrap their head around. If they think, ‘the only difference is when I’m taking this game on the road,’ that’s not the difference in platforms.”

Koller brought up Assassin’s Creed III’s upcoming launch on PS3 side-by-side with a totally different game in the form of Liberation on the Vita as the desired future of content for both platforms. “That’s what we drive towards. When you look at games that are coming up, we try to offer unique experiences between the two platforms. Usually, we’re successful in that.”

The conversation turned to Sony’s vaunted cross-buy program, which gives consumers a free copy of the Vita iteration of a game when purchasing the PS3 version. The critically-acclaimed PSN game Sound Shapes is one such title that does it. PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale will do it in November, and Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time will do it in February. The question is, will all first-party games and other exclusives now do it automatically?

“It’s still game-by-game,” Koller answered. “We look at it as, ‘what are the games that have the best opportunity for this?’ Certainly, this holiday season there’s going to be a lot of Vitas sold. There’s going to be a lot of opportunity for that Vita consumer to say, ‘Do I want to continue buying more games for this device?’ For us, that’s critical. Getting them to continue to experience new experiences, new ways of playing like an All-Stars, is important. That’s why we offered that. We’ll look at it case-by-case. Certainly, it’s been met very positively. That was something that we wanted to see. We wanted to see if consumers were interested, and the answer has been screamed back at us: ‘yes we are.’”

Koller also confirmed that -- like PS2 and PS3 before it -- Sony intends on supporting the PlayStation Vita for a full 10 years. “We’re in year one, so we’ll be supporting it for some time. But yeah, it does have its own 10-year life cycle. All of our platforms do… it’s a marathon, not a sprint. We expect long-term success from all our platforms.”

Even though Koller is best-known for his perspective on hardware, I couldn’t help but ask him about Sony’s software, especially in terms of the truncation of Sony’s first party roster this year from 15 studios to 12. Sony only shut down a single studio from 1994 to 2011, but three in 2012. But why? And will it affect the future of Sony exclusives?

“What we’ve tried to do is focus all of our assets and resources on that objective of putting out the best content to help move platforms,” Koller said. “Any move we make… it’s done with that in mind. It’s a focus question, and that’s what gets me most excited on the platform side. I know that we’ve got the biggest and best internal game studios in the industry. I feel great about what’s coming.”

Halo 7, 8, 9 Websites Purchased by Microsoft

Microsoft has purchased domains related to Halo 7, Halo 8 and Halo 9. Registered by internet brand protection company MarkMonitor, Microsoft acquired Halo7.net, Halo7.org, Halo8.org, Halo 9.net and Halo9.org within the past 48 hours.

The domains were registered by DNStination, Inc., a service administered by MarkMonitor. MarkMonitor lists Microsoft as a “strategic alliance” on its official site and has worked to register Microsoft domains in the past.

Microsoft has previously announced that the upcoming Halo 4 will begin a series of three games known as the Reclaimer Trilogy. While that trilogy will presumably include Halo 4, 5 and 6, this is the first hint that Microsoft could already be actively planning for games beyond that. Just recently, a 343 Industries job listing suggested a Halo game is already in the works for next-gen consoles.

This is the second high-profile domain registration by Microsoft in recent months, following a series of Xbox 8 domains the company secured back in July. It’s likely that Microsoft is simply protecting its brand by registering these new Halo domains, though it's worth noting that Microsoft doesn't own Halo.com and only acquired Halo4.com after the game's E3 2011 announcement. We’ve reached out for comment just in case.

For now, the only future Halo game announced is Halo 4, which will hit stores on November 6th. For much more, check out our Halo 4 wiki guide and information on Halo 4’s changes to Capture the Flag announced at PAX.

Gravity Falls' Big Video Game Episode

Since its debut in June, the animated series Gravity Falls has proven to be a very clever and witty addition to the Disney Channel lineup. And tonight’s brand new episode, called “Fight Fighters”, should prove especially notable for IGN readers, as it’s all about video games.

In “Fight Fighters”, Dipper (Jason Ritter) is challenged to a video game contest and is shocked when his favorite fighting game character, Rumble McSkirmish (prolific animation and video game voice actor Brian Bloom) comes to life to help him. However, Dipper soon finds that controlling Rumble is not so easy…

Check out a couple of clips from the episode below. While old school fighting games like Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat are the clear initial inspiration, you’ll see some notable nods to other games as well.

Gravity Falls: “Fight Fighters” airs Friday, September 14th at 9:30pm ET/PT on Disney Channel.

Nothing. The Dirge of Eír Glanfath is sound without form, a lone voice crying out in mourning because it must."

Clicking on the image takes you to forum landing page for Project X Speculation & Discussion where Obsidian fans have begun to speculate on what the words mean.

Described as a forum for "Obsidian's next RPG endeavor" it teases said game is so secret "not even its project codename is yet being revealed."

Football Manager 2013 New Modes

Football Manager 2013 is said to mark "a seismic shift" in the series, and one of the ways it's doing this is the brand-new classic mode, or as it's being referred to at the studio 'FMC'.

For the first time in the franchise's history, the mode gives players a "less time-consuming way for players to approach the game". It simplifies the game to a degree, allowing you to focus on winning the league.

“The introduction of FMC is a major step forward in Football Manager’s evolution,” says Miles Jacobson, Studio Director of Sport's Interactive. “In recent years it’s become clear that there’s a large group of people who would like to play Football Manager, but simply can’t devote the time required to get the most out of the game – in fact, now that they have families and other commitments, even some members of the SI team have found themselves in this position. We decided, therefore, to try to find a way to accommodate players with limited free time, without significantly diluting the experience. We believe that FMC achieves this beautifully."

Now you'll be able to play through an entire season in eight to ten hours. You can also embark on an open-ended career or play the game's new challenge mode – it'll test your managerial know-how with real-world circumstances usually over the length of half a season.

But if you're a devoted fan of Football Manager, don't worry. Nobody is diluting the experience you love. Jacobson goes on to say, “I would, however, like to stress to our many, many fans around the world that the introduction of FMC will not impact in any way on the game that they’ve come to know and love. For those who still want the full, ‘hands-on’ experience, FM13 offers exactly what they’re looking for – a bigger, better and even more immersive version of the world's greatest football management simulation.”

The game also boasts a new improved 3D engine, new staff roles including the introduction of those bothersome 'Directors of Football', refreshed interactions with the media, and worldwide leaderboards.

Football Manager 2013 will be out on PC and Mac sometime before Christmas 2012.

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII Announced

Square Enix has announced Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII. Set to arrive in 2013, Lightning Returns will incorporate “a brand-new story, world, characters and an enhanced gameplay system,” according to Square Enix. The game will feature Lightning as a solo playable character and allow her to freely roam a new world.

Other details regarding Lightning Returns are limited. We do know that the main story takes place hundreds of years after Final Fantasy XIII-2, set in a world called Novus Partus -- which is composed of four islands connected by monorail. The development team told IGN that three of the guiding pillars for the art direction in Lightning Returns are "gothic, mechanical and fantasy."

The most startling change to Lightning Returns comes in the form of the doomsday countdown. According to Square-Enix, the world will end after 13 days, and a massive clock will count down constantly in the corner of the screen to indicate this looming deadline. Any action players take, even taking the monorail from place to place, will spend time and hasten the end of days.

With Lightning as the only playable character, players will have unparalleled control over customizing her looks and combat style. The battle system itself, a greatly modified version of the previous two, will feature real-time elements including direct control of Lightning's movement and her attacks, as well as time-based moves that drain the doomsday counter. Lightning Returns will also include a real-time block system, designed to make battles much more active and time-based. Even dying mid-battle will activate a prompt to give players the choice to rewind their mistakes at the expense of the timer.

Lightning Returns was announced at today’s Final Fantasy 25th Anniversary Event, which Square Enix has been teasing since last month. In early July, Final Fantasy XIII and XIII-2 director Motomu Toriyama hinted at the project, which entered production at the beginning of August, followed shortly by a teaser site.

Square Enix confirmed that Lightning Returns will be the final chapter of Lightning’s saga, which began in Final Fantasy XIII back in 2010. Lightning’s sister Serah was the focus of Final Fantasy XIII-2, which hit stores earlier this year and received downloadable content that continued Lightning’s story.

No other details have been announced, but be sure to check out Square Enix’s official Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII site for more updates as they’re revealed.

Andrew Goldfarb is IGN’s associate news editor. He spent 100 hours playing Final Fantasy XIII-2. Keep up with pictures of the latest food he’s been eating by following him on Twitter or IGN.

Borderlands 2 Will Have Four Add-on Campaigns

Gearbox has announced that upcoming shooter Borderlands 2 will get four brand new add-on content campaigns following the game's launch.

Though specific details are scarce, each campaign is slated to contain several hours of gameplay with new adventures, allies, enemies and environments in each.

While each pack can be purchased individually for $9.99 (on PC/PS3) or for 800 MS points (Xbox 360), Gearbox has also revealed that it will be offering a Borderlands 2 Season Pass which will allow gamers to download each expansion as soon as it's released for no extra charge. The pass will cost 2400 MS points and $29.99 on both PS3 and PC (in the UK it will cost £19.69 on PS3 and £19.99 on PC).

All four DLC add-ons will apparently be released by June 2013. While we don't know what each one will involve, as the upcoming Mechromancer class apparently won't be covered by the Season Pass, it's a fairly safe bet that it isn't being counted as one of the four pieces of DLC.

Borderlands 2 will release on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC on September 18 in the US and September 21 in the UK.
